Performance appraisal, also referred to as, performance evaluation, is the assessment of past performance within a given time frame. Most companies have performance evaluations once a year to determine how well employees have performed relevant to expectations and to use this information to make a variety of talent and organizational decisions. Although this is the norm, modern notions suggest once a year performance evaluations are not as effective as continuous feedback throughout the year.
